NMC bans New Year parties over Covid-19 concerns
Nagpur: Pouring cold water on New Year’s eve party plans, Municipal Commissioner Radhakrishnan B has appealed to citizens to remain confined to respective homes and avoid stepping out in view of concerns over spread of COVID-19. A notification issued on Tuesday by Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) also banned religious and cultural events that used to be a hallmark of year end celebrations in pubs, hotels, discotheques.
Similarly, NMC has also advised citizens not to crowd temples and other religious places on the first day of new year nor should any one take out any procession. Generally youth also gather in large numbers at Futala, Ambazari, Dharampeth, Gandhisagar Lake, Itwari, Mahal etc. on the last night of the year to welcome new year but this year no one is allowed to mix and gather or organise any event.
Considering the outbreak of COVID-19 and concerns over new strain, citizens are advised to take care of their health and avoid crowding these places and also shun any plans for large gatherings. In particular, citizens above the age of 60 and children below the age of 10 should avoid leaving the house for safety and health reasons.
When saying goodbye to the New Year and welcoming the New Year, social distancing should be maintained, masks and sanitizers must be used and special care taken. Violation of the above order by anyone will result in legal action under Sections 51 and 60 of the Disaster Management Act 2005 as well as Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code, the order said
