City trio in Maharashtra squad
GOLD medal winning athletes Sandip Gound and Bhavyashree Mahalle and silver winning runner Mitali Bhoyar were selected in the Maharashtra State team for upcoming National Junior Athletics Championships that get under way at Guwahati from February 6. The 87-member strong Maharashtra squad was announced on Sunday. Gound won gold in 80m hurdles in 10.92 seconds in Boys Under-16 group.
A member of Om Sai Sporting Club, Umred, he is coached by Praful Bele. Mahalle was the first to touch crossing line in 2000m event in Girls Under-16 category with a time of 6:44.40 seconds with the cut-off being 7:03.11 secs. Bhoyar bagged a silver medal in Girls U-18 1500m carving a timing of 5:04.00s with the qualifying time being 5:11.75s. Both Mahalle and Bhoyar are members of Nav-Maharashtra Krida Mandal and practice under coach Jitendra Ghordadekar at Ishwar Deshmukh College of Physical Education, Krida Square. Umred’s Devashree Lavhe won a silver in the 400m run for Under-18 girls but since she could not finish with better timing than the qualifying one, she was not selected.
Nagpur’s Tulsi Chaudhary also performed well but could not secure a spot in the walking event. Dada Konddev Award winning coach Bhau Kane, Principal Dhananjay Kane, Shirish Bhagat, Prashant Jagtap and others congratulated the athletes on their selection.
